He belonged to the Banu Adi tribe of Makka. He was one of the followers of the monotheistic religion of Ibrahim. He was the paternal cousin of Umar bin al-Khattab (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ). Saeed bin Zaid (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) was probably the first convert from the clan of Banu 'Adi and he probably influenced six other early converts. He is counted amongst the ten blessed companions. He was married to Fatima bint Khattab, sister of Umar (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) the second pious Caliph.
Saeed and his wife Fatima accepted Islam together and both belonged to "the vanguard of Islam". Umar (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) embraced Islam after he heard a recitation of the Quranic verses from Saeed's wife and his own sister Fatima. Saeed was in the first batch of emigrants from Medina and he stayed in the house of Abu Lababah Ansari (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ). When the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) establish a brotherhood (Mawakhoat between the Ansar and Muhajireen, he entrusted Saeed bin Zayd (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) to Rai bin Malik Ansar.
Hazrat Saeed (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) participated in all the battles led by the Holy Prophet (ﷺ) (Ghuzwaat) and was present on the occasion of Bai'at-i-Ridwan. He also participated in the battle of Ajnadayn (13 A.H.) against the Byzantine army. This was fought during Abu Bakr's caliphate and the commander of the Muslim army was Khalid bin Walid. During Umar's caliphate when Khalid had laid siege to Damascus, he appointed Saeed the commander of cavalry troops. The Byzantine army suffered heavy defeat and Damascus fell to the Muslim army.
Then in the battle of Yarmouk, he led an infantry division and played important role in the Muslim victory. After the capture of Syria Saeed moved to Medina to lead a retired life. He attended Umar in 23 A.H. When he was fatally wounded and advised to nominate his successor and Umar accordingly nominated six persons (excluding from the list Saeed bin Zayd) eligible for the caliphate. In 35 A.H. when Uthman (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) was killed, Saeed was in Kufa, where he eventually died in 51 A.H. at the age of 80. Hazrat Saeed (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ) was well known for his piety, worship, and devotion and he led a very simple life.
